Description

7/2/2003 We're not paying attention Every month for over two years there have been fewer jobs in the U.S. than there were the month before. The numbers for job losses are actually worse than they appear to be.
6/25/2003 Let us talk of many things Reading the Argus and Press Democrat today, I couldn't help but notice how inflammatory the headlines were on the city campaign finance stories.
6/18/2003 Good traffic, bad traffic As with many things, traffic can be considered good or bad depending on how it's perceived. Good traffic is any traffic associated with a project I support. Bad traffic is any traffic associated with a project you support. And vice versa.
6/11/2003 A utility tax is OK, but... A utility tax on our gas and electric bill is probably the most equitable way to generate funds for street improvements. Our use of PG&E resources is most likely related to our overall use of local public streets.
6/4/2003 It's all about security The original force behind the formation of countries, what are called Nation States or just nations, was the need for security (safety).
5/28/2003 Campaign finance reform Next week the City Council is scheduled to have a discussion about retaining, modifying or eliminating the city's campaign finance ordinance that was passed in December of 2000. There'll be much high-minded rhetoric, but keep in mind how politics really works.
5/21/2003 You're going to pay sooner or later I was talking with a guy who's in favor of any tax cut proposed. He's in favor of eliminating the inheritance tax even though he won't leave enough to have to pay any; he's in favor of eliminating tax on dividends although he doesn't get any dividends; he's in favor of getting rid of taxes on capital gains although his capital gains are minimal.
5/14/2003 Considering a Lakeville casion Much is being written about the possibility of an Indian casino in the area of Route 37 and Lakeville highway.
5/7/2003 More thoughts on Iraq I've been thinking lately about the President's running of the country and his decision to go to war in Iraq. Running the country, including foreign relations, is something we expect of all Presidents. Going to war is something else.
4/30/2003 What's going on at city hall? Just when I think an end has come to city hall being involved in Machiavellian goings on, up pops something, out of the blue, about the city buying the Kenilworth property from the school district. WOW!!
4/23/2003 Keep your eye on the ball Things seem to be looking up lately. A Citizen's Advisory Committee has come up with a rational plan for fixing the city's streets, the City Council has put Rainier back on the list of planned future projects, and the Central Petaluma Specific Plan is finally in line for approval after seven plus years. What do all these items have in common?
4/16/2003 A job well done Last week I watched the the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) for Roads and Streets presentation to the City Council. It was impressive.
4/9/2003 Let's fix 101 once and for all The problem with 101 is extremely simple, too many people use it.
4/2/2003 Laugh, cry or get angry The Washington/McDowell intersection work is finally complete. It's beautiful but I don't know whether to laugh, cry or be angry.
3/26/2003 A bunch of random thoughts Some random thoughts and thought provoking questions?
3/19/2003 Why a Central Petaluma plan? My concern is that what started as a pragmatic exercise to strengthen downtown will be turned into a competition between professionals and ideologs to show how an "ideal" modern downtown could develop
3/12/2003 What to do about Iraq I don't have a simple go or no go position on going to war in Iraq.
3/5/2003 The council can never win The only time the council can "win" is when they bow to the wishes of various small groups advocating special interest actions.
2/26/2003 Evaluating the headlines Restaurateur dies in home invasion, Body of slain man in burned house, Man shot to death on Liberty road, Bicyclist dies in auto accident on North McDowell Boulevard, Man shot by deputy remains hospitalized...
2/19/2003 Are we playing checkers or chess? The thoughts for this piece got started by the facetious comment that the latest increase of the terror alert is part of the President's plan to boost the economy.
2/12/2003 Three little stories - Part 1 Three local projects were discussed in the newspapers and on the public access channel last week; the project located at the present Kenilworth Jr. High site, expansion of the Factory Outlet (including a movie theater) and a proposed residential development on Magnolia.
2/5/2003 It's just like a cruise Once on the cruise, they have little or no control of what happens to them until they're back in homeport again.   Similarly, once a governing body is constituted following an election, there's not much the voters can do until the next election comes around.
1/29/2003 Why is it always someone else's fault? Because the deficit is the state's, we're quick to assume it must be their fault. One, it isn't and two, if it is, the state government is us.
1/22/2003 An economic accident waiting to happen Our current national economic slowdown has been kept from becoming serious by the consumer's continued willingness to spend money for consumer goods.
1/15/2003 It's time to focus Our new City Council is installed and ready to get to work. My suggestion to them is, "Follow the money". Not just the expenditure of the money but what is being produced or committed to by the expenditure of that money.
1/8/2003 George made me do it After the President's "axis-of-evil" speech, I'm not surprised at North Korea reopening its nuclear facility and Iran contracting with Russia for a new nuclear plant. They're being forced to do it in, of all things, self-defense.
1/1/2003 A new year and a new direction The New Year's here and with it an almost new City Council (3 new faces plus 1 re-elected). Hopefully these new faces will help the council focus in a new direction. We've had six years of our leaders being more concerned with the appearance of governance rather than governing.
12/25/2002 Give yourself a present Give yourself the gift of time to use next year, and maybe forever?
12/18/2002 Airline travel must change The airline companies just can't seem to get it straight.  Following the same  avoidable boom and bust patterns.
12/11/2002 Keep them working I came across a C-span presentation by the Urban Institute - a Washington think tank - discussing the need to keep people working longer.  Perhaps they see no problem, from their point of view, in continuing to go to their executive offices until they're in their 70's.
12/4/2002 It's mostly on the front page Not surprisingly, most of the important happenings in Petaluma can be found on the front page of the Argus. The four headline stories for November 27th were, the Kentucky St. fire, Petaluma Community Access (PCA), Wetlands plans in peril and Glass elected mayor. But, let's look behind the headlines.
11/27/2002 Nineteen eighty four plus 20 When H.G. Wells wrote the book "1984" during the developing cold war in 1948, the main character, "Big Brother", was the surrogate for Stalin and the Soviet Union. The book's premise that an all-powerful state could monitor every citizen.  Unfortunately, recent events (i.e. politics and legislation since 9/11) have brought back the possibility of a similar but less intrusive government.
11/20/2002 We didn't elect a majority The problem with the last several councils has been that many have not worked together for the people of Petaluma but have argued among themselves to promote personal ideologies. It's time for that to stop.
11/13/2002 Too close to call I have a theory I call the friendly stranger. What happens is that those in office can't help but offend or anger some of the public every time they make a council decision. At the same time, the stranger (the new challenger), while not having name recognition, also hasn't done anything to cause the public to dislike him (or her).
11/6/2002 Hooray for the auto The auto industry is worse than the government in failing to promote itself. I've long believed that the reason we hear so many negative things about the government is because it never bothers to brag about all the good things it does (i.e. Water, sewer, fire, police, etc.). This lets each person focus on only the few things he or she thinks government is doing wrong. Similarly, the auto industry is very good at selling cars but never takes the time to remind people of how much of our quality of life exists because of the car.
10/30/2002 What this election means This newspaper has published a series of interviews and position statements from the incumbents and challengers in this year's city elections. These have enlightened us about their individual views but haven't informed or suggested what their election would mean relative to the council's and the city's actions for the next two years. Let me try, from my point of view.
10/23/2002 It's election time again Finally, after all these weeks, months or even years of watching government in action (or is that inaction?), we get a chance to have our view noticed.  This is the time we evaluate our elected officials' actions relative to those actions compatible with our personal interests.
10/16/2002 They can't live up to their billing We've all seen it in the movies or on TV, the SWAT team rushes in and saves the innocent victim, the super secret government agency, using exotic tools, uncovers dastardly plots, and the vile villains get their just deserts. If only life were so straightforward.
10/9/2002 Small "e" environmentalists I've been feeling badly that I've used the term "environmentalist" generically when I criticize certain things, or the narrow positions some people take. Environmentalists have a broad view and look at the earth's whole needs, including the needs of those inhabitants who happen to be human. And they understand the need to balance those needs against one another.
10/2/2002 Finally some action on fixing our streets Our City Council has finally found some money for street repair and set priorities for the first round of repairs. Let's take this time to give credit for this where credit is due, Councilmember Bryant Moynihan.
9/25/2002 Let's attack Iraq Why should we attack Iraq? Well, we need the practice if it's going to be our national policy to keep ANY country that's not friendly to us from developing Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD's).
9/18/2002 The "best" plan for downtown The best plan for downtown or for anything is always the latest plan. So those who want to put their mark on development have to develop a new plan. Thus they find a reason that the existing plan doesn't measure up and make a "decision" to replace it.
9/11/2002 The poor get poorer Have you noticed how often one group's solution to a problem results in others paying the price? The latest example of this is state legislation to raise the smog standards autos in the Bay Area must meet to get reregistered.
9/4/2002 The story behind the parking story There have been a number of stories lately about downtown Petaluma, its problems and its opportunities. But behind each of these stories there is another story (or stories) that's not brought out.
8/28/2002 If I could trust As far as the federal and to a large extent state governments are concerned, I no longer trust them. I think I've crossed the line from being skeptical to being cynical.
8/21/2002 Time for a cleanup column Some interesting thoughts...
8/14/2002 National health care is coming With reports of health insurance cost increases of 25% to 40% projected for this year and next, many non-seniors will either find it too expensive or will find their employers unwilling to pick up the increase.
8/7/2002 Is anyone doing anything? What with all the attention being given to how to pay for street repairs, it's been completely overlooked that no one seems to be preparing to actually do anything about it
7/31/2002 Are we getting too serious? Just when I began to think Councilmember Maguire had matured in service and was becoming a relatively balanced council representative, BANG, his paranoia kicks in.
7/24/2002 What's going on with Iraq? Is it reasonable to expect Saddam to just sit and wait or are we trying to force him to take some action to justify a reaction by us?
7/17/2002 Well-regulated greed is good In the 80's, greed was good. In the 90's it was the same but it wasn't called greed. Now, with the fall in the stock market since 2000, greed is bad again.
7/10/2002 Magic money, there when you need it I hesitate to get started on this piece because it makes me seem like such an ingrate. I supported a parcel tax and even a city sales tax for the purpose of fixing our streets when it seemed there was no other source of funds. Now, like magic and without any forewarning, the City Council has found a source that was there all along
7/3/2002 Remembering the Fourth of July We have the fireworks (for now) and the rhetoric on the Fourth but don't give the event and the people it commemorates much thought even on that day.
6/26/2002 Maybe we can't fight global warming When I read about the global warming, my perverse nature immediately turned to the idea of global cooling. The first thing that came to mind was the ice ages, and an Internet search lead me to the Illinois State Museum as a popular source. (www.museum.state.us.il) The information was interesting.
6/19/2002 Will Cader-Thompson resign? In recent months the City Council has been concerned that our local cable access operation hasn't been managed as well as it should have been.
6/12/2002 Terrorism by the media Whenever it seems the public might be interested in any government action other than the "war" on terror, there suddenly arise reports of potential terrorist threats.
6/5/2002 Could Councilmember Moynihan be right? There seems to be universal agreement that Councilmember Moynihan is abrasive, disruptive, divisive, arrogant and definitely not a team player. The penalty that goes along with this reputation is that the other councilmembers are quick to reject his comments and suggestions.
5/29/2002 No wonder we get confused We disparage our elected officials' actions but we continue to re-elect them. We hold them in low regard in competence but we expect them to come up with perfect solutions to difficult and divisive problems.
5/22/2002 Clear air, Lafferty and fireworks A recent news story reported, "Sonoma County air quality D" as measured by an organization that monitors air quality. This would seem to indicate quite a bit of bad air in the county. Looking into the numbers on the organization's web site discloses a different story.
5/15/2002 Road Tax It looks as if we're going to have the opportunity to vote on assessing ourselves for a parcel tax to pay for fixing some major streets in town.
5/8/2002 Getting along together The ongoing controversy about drilling for oil in the Artic National Wildlife Reserve would seem to be the ideal vehicle for reaching a compromise between Environment and Business. Unfortunately...
5/1/2002 Tax Entitlemenst of special fees? The City Council is in a bind trying to find money to do the things they need or want to do. As a result, they had a consultant perform a special study to determine how the city could charge for various services.

4/24/2002

Israelis and Palestinians

For fifty years both sides have heard why their side is right and the other side is wrong.  Three generations know that God is on their side.

4/17/2002

The Council fights a downhill battle

The City Council is presently embroiled in an argument about the funding of PCA (Petaluma Community Access television).

4/10/2002

The day growth got out of hand

I remember well the day Petaluma’s growth got out of hand.  It was March 8, 1969.  I went down to breakfast on the morning after we moved into our new house and looked out the window.  A few hundred feet away I could see the framework of a house being built on the next street.  It was then I realized Petaluma was growing too fast.  I’ll bet many of you who moved into new homes can remember a similar day.

4/3/2002

No good deed goes unpunished

I came across a quote that said, “Gratitude is the most fleeting of human emotions”.  And there’s something to that.

3/27/2002

Needed, a new attitude at city hall

I thought I was reacting to an extreme amount of overhead cost when I mentioned that the proposed street tax or assessment included 40% overhead (60% of the money for construction and 40% for paperwork).

3/20/2002

Six months is a long time

It's been six months now since the September 11 attacks and then the anthrax scare. These were very significant events which shook many people's confidence and created much anxiety. But, what changed then, seemingly forever, and what has changed since then?

3/13/2002

Our ruined roads

Issues regarding our badly deteriorated city streets.

3/6/2002

Liberals usually become conservatives

It's handy to have a label to attach to people. Liberal, conservative, libertarian, etc. are all convenient ways to pigeonhole individuals and their beliefs. But, are such labels valid over time or across diverse subjects?

2/27/2002

Buy a dozen, they're inexpensive

There have been many stories in the newspapers and on TV lately about Enron's campaign contributions to elected officials.   Most people are outraged at this attempt to buy a legislator's goodwill.  I'm outraged at how cheaply these people can be bought.

2/20/2002

What doesn't get done is also important

Most people, when they look at a governmental budget, are interested in and focus on how much is being spent for what. This may be generally appropriate but it misses the important point of being aware of what things aren't getting done.

2/13/2002

The ultimate growth control

The latest proposed solution to control congestion on 101 is to limit the construction of new commercial buildings in Petaluma. ... Apparently, Petalumans commuting to Elsewhere don't cause congestion...

2/6/2002

It's like being at a funeral

The way everyone's avoiding criticizing what's happening as the result of September 11 reminds me of being at the funeral of a powerful person or someone of notoriety.

1/30/2002

Some miscellaneous thoughts

Some extraneous thoughts come to me as I read...

1/23/2002

There's an alternative to sprawl

By defining what is and is not acceptable, the issue of sprawl can be eliminated from the city's growth decisions following acceptance of the new General Plan.

1/16/2002

They don't know any better

...it's not really their fault, they don't know any better. These people at the decision influencing and making level do not represent, socio-economically, all those who will be affected by their decisions.

1/9/2002

Who are these people?

Reading the letters to the editor is a part of my daily review of what's going on. These letters offer a broad view into what all types of people are thinking.

1/2/2002

A new year has begun

We've come to that time again when an old year is over and a new year has just begun. Even though time flows in a continuous stream there is a human need to define boundaries in time so events may be sorted into little packets, packets beginning with each January and ending with each December.

12/26/2001

The fastest growing city in California

By a vote of 96% in favor, California cities have endorsed the resolution that all future building above that needed to replace burned down or otherwise destroyed churches should be directed to the Mythical city of Elsewhere.

12/18/2001

A few miscellaneous thoughts

So many comments, so little space. Every now and then my urge to comment on what's going on vastly exceeds the number of column words allowed. So here are a number of short comments.

12/12/2001

Quick fixes can be dangerous

I find the action by President Bush in creating secret military tribunals by Executive Order very disturbing. I'm not against military tribunals, but why do they have to be secret?

12/5/2001

The transit myth lingers on

The availability of partial data from the 2000 census has resurrected the idea that we need more transit.

11/28/2001

Airport security, a no win situation

Should airport security be privatized or operated by the government? That was the question a week or two ago. Wait a minute, it's privatized NOW!!

11/21/2001

Taliban, American style

We've heard a lot about the Afghan Taliban in the last year... They seemed more civilized and orderly than the other factions and so they prevailed... Once they were in control however, their civility turned into heavy-handed suppression of anything that didn't meet their religious "values"....

11/14/2001

Every cloud has a silver lining

For the past two months we've been bombarded with the negative impact of the September 11 tragedy and the anthrax scare.  But, perhaps there may be some good, or at least positive, things coming out of it all.   The first thing it did was to give us back our heroes.

11/7/2001

What's it all about?

I'm still mulling over the September 11 events and trying to determine a satisfactory "Why". Osama bin Laden surely knew that, while he could hurt us, a single event would neither topple our government nor cripple our economy. He must also have known that, if successful, his actions would enrage us to seek retribution. We would be more united, more determined not to give in by changing our Middle East policies and more fixed on eliminating his group. What then was his motive?

10/31/2001

Is a service economy stable?

Much has been made lately of the fact that this country is transitioning from an industrial economy to an information economy, all within a global economy.

10/24/2001

Wildebeest and antelope

As the September 11 tragedy and its legacy become a new and permanent part of our lives, I've been trying to find an analogy of something that mimics how different people react to such events.

10/17/2001

Follow the money

In many criminal cases the perpetrators are found by law enforcement personnel following a money trail back to the criminal. The present WTC tragedy has tied most of the hijackers together and to bin Laden by following the money trail. It might be interesting to project the money trail ahead and think about how it could affect us.

10/10/2001

Trails are OK, but people aren't

Press Democrat: "A proposal to build a trail through the Mayacmas Mountains in southeastern Sonoma County is encountering a familiar obstacle: unsubstantiated fear of hikers."

10/3/2001

Some thoughts from the present crisis

I thought the national trauma caused by the World Trade Center and Pentagon catastrophes would eliminate the double talk and political maneuvering that has become the steady fare of Washington, but it hasn't. There has been much less only because everyone is afraid of getting caught being partisan.

9/25/2001

More talk about our crisis

I was hoping that the WTC catastrophe would bring about some straight talk and a lessening of turf protection from the various federal agencies. It just may be too soon for these entrenched agencies and their career personnel to change their outlook on how to operate. Or, perhaps, it's still "business as usual".

10/3/2001

Flying will never be the same

In the past, security has been associated with passenger safety. Airport security has been focused on preventing potential hijackers from getting on the plane with deadly weapons. No weapons, no hijacking.

9/19/2001

The day our world changed

I've spent the day watching and listening to the news about the attacks in New York and Washington and am having difficulty sorting through the implications they'll have on our lives. Our horror at the physical results of the attack and our anger at whoever was behind it will combine to change this country's actions both internally and externally.

9/12/2001

Is there really a lockbox?

There's been a lot of discussion lately about whether or not there really is a federal budget surplus. Much of the answer lies in the question of whether or not there is a Social Security surplus and if that surplus can be protected by a so called "lockbox".

9/5/2001

The games people play

Back in the sixties there was a book titled "The Games People Play". This book catalogued, discussed and dissected the various interactions between people and groups in our society. One of the "games" was called, "Let's you and him fight"

8/29/2001

Suburbs, yesterday and tomorrow

Suburban development isn't the auto's fault. The auto has just become the preferred means of travel.

8/22/2001

Stem cell research

There's a lot more than meets the eye on this topic. First and foremost, the Presidents position relates only to stem cell research using federal funds. There is no policy, no restraint and no oversight on privately funded research. The private sector can do all the research it wants as long as it spends its own money to do it.

8/2/2001

It's all part of a game

Whether it's a private sector company or a public body that wants to implement a potentially controversial new plan or process, there's a technique called, "Don't give them lead time" that's often used.

8/8/2001

Why are we always surprised?

"If government doesn't plan, what does it do?"  "How could we have been surprised? If government …."

8/1/2001

It's your money

When  government is taking action related to public health and safety there is usually very little publicity.  However, when government wants to do something to serve a particular constituency, it goes to great lengths to justify what it.

7/25/2001

Should human cloning be allowed?

The initial decision in the U.S. will be to ban human cloning but with the decision being reversed some years later.

7/18/2001

Lies, damn lies and statistics

People are forever using numbers to convince us that we should support or oppose something. Numbers are thrown about in ways that can either clarify or confuse our understanding of an issue.

7/11/2001

Numbers tell strange tales

Some states paid more into the federal gas tax funds than they get back.

7/4/2001

Some free environmental benefits

Using the garbage disposal wastes a resource, could generate electricity, reduce water use and lessen wastewater treatment.

6/20/2001

Are we wasting money on studies?

Cartwright example, councilmembers approve study then don't accept results.

6/11/2001

Perspectives, perceptions and old news

Israeli pop to US pop, decline in homocides, USS cole and local news.

6/13/2001

Other peoples money

Open Space District , Cooly ranch, McCrea ranch, wasting funds

6/6/2001

Must we improve our streets?

Need for any bond or assessment to be restricted to deferred maintenance and not used for bile lanes and beautification. Also, existing $ shouldn't be reassigned to other city uses.

5/30/2001

Hooray for politicians

We need them to facilitate energy actions. Info about writing letters.

5/22/2001

Not a crisis, but an opportunity

Energy shortage could accelerate high milage vehicles, solar and wind power, change commute

5/15/2001

It's lonely at the top

Support of Bryant trying to get financial info straight.

5/8/2001

Buy the cow, not the milkcan

State should control generating plants not electrical transmission system

5/1/2001

When is a bribe not a bribe?

$500 a plate lunch to try to get money for flood work in Payran.

4/24/2001

It's the media's fault

Press Democrat editorial taking blame for not being on top of power crisis. I say no because it's a matter of being interested in following up on legislation by public.

4/17/2001

The problem is with the solutions

Need to agree on solving the problem at all must happen before alternates are seriously evaluated.

4/10/2001

Compromise isn't a dirty word

Meeting half way (after cleanup) should be the goal.

4/3/2001

First there has to be a crisis

Overload, book and reality, PG&E like situation

3/28/2001

Sustainability, the new buzzword

Used to confuse the issue, an open ended challenge, move ahead with the General Plan and address sustainability as it comes up.

3/21/2001

Where is our council going?

Need to clean up problems from old council before moving ahead. Ammendment 11, General Plan, Rainier, campsign funding.

3/14/2001

Maybe it's time for tradeoffs

101 and open space - Rainier and Lafferty and The Hub - bike paths and building in flood plain

3/7/2001

Gimmee a break

Political hypocracy about Clinton's pardons VS George Sr.'s, tax breaks because of good or bad economy, congress ignores its corruption ie donations to them

2/28/2001

Should we help the doctors?

Yes - their greed brought on HMO's, office procedures, Dr. owned pharmacies, etc.

2/21/2001

(All) the snow isn't on the mountain

Joe Nation's response to my letter about any energy bailout.Sonoma County sales to PG&E

2/14/2001

Today's problems, tomorrow's solutions

The need for government to look ahead and forecast problem areas -energy, gas, electric.

2/7/2001

Something like it was bound to happen

Impact of initiatives - Prop 13, term limits, 2/3rd tax vote, always problems.

1/31/2001

Son of Rural Heritage Initiative

Suggestion for how to do it, 1 parcel per year, open space agreement.

1/24/2001

But, on the other hand …

How good times or bad times can justify a tax cut, etc.

1/17/2001

Let's elect some bankers

Bankers would be good legislators, collateral, payback, fair deal not giveaway

1/10/2001

We have a perfectly good General Plan.

General Plan function of population not date.

1/3/2001

What's going on with energy prices?

How could we have had enough in 99 but be so short in 00? Also, can't trust deregulation.

12/27/2000

Gone but not forgotten

Legacy of discontent left behind by New Majority council when they left.keller.

12/20/2000

Consume or be unemployed

Consumption as measured by wages is what drives the world's economy.

12/13/2000

Who pays for the quality of life?

About the cost increases passed on to the poor for Q of L issues - gas fireplaces, suv's, energy problems due to Q of L decisions.

12/6/2000

Save the small farms for who?

Saving small farms mostly for Sonoma County background effect. Son of open space?

11/28/2000

Kenilworth sale, a plan or a scheme?

Likelyhood that there has been coodination between school and city on actions.

11/21/2000

A new look for Petaluma.

Old City Council -Lafferty, wastewater plant,- new, rational environmental program - Healey's river gravel, Rainier, goldplated studies.

11/14/2000

Why do people vote or not vote?

3/4th register, 3/4th of them vote, apathy, confusion, special interest, duty.
